BE GRAPHIC: Don’t believe me about how fast things have moved in the last century? How about just the last thirty years? For a refresher, try Atari’s Pole Position to get your racing fix and wax nostalgic for 8-bit pixelated graphics.
CATCH LIGHTNING: I don’t often use Disney movies to prove my point. Okay, I have a young son so, the truth is, I often use Disney movies to prove my point. But there is no better lecture on the dangers of going it alone when you are dis- tracted by fame and fortune than the one in the animated movie Cars (2006):
Strip “The King” Weathers: Hey, buddy. You’re one gutsy racer. Lightning Mcqueen: Oh, hey, Mr. The King. Strip “The King” Weathers: You got more talent in one lug nut than a lot of cars has got in their whole body. Lightning Mcqueen: Really? Oh, that... Strip “The King” Weathers: But you’re stupid. Lightning Mcqueen: Excuse me? Strip “The King” Weathers: This ain’t a one- man deal, kid. You need to wise up and get a good crew chief and a good team. You ain’t gonna win unless you got good folks behind you. Sure, it’s essentially the same lesson learned by Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder (1990) and Will Farrell in Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby (2006). But in this case, it’s a real racing legend giving the talking-to. Strip Weathers is voiced by NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty.
